He gained renown for his personal intervention in the defence of Shipka on 23 August, when he led wounded men in a bayonet counterattack.

Born in Krushevo, Vezenkov grew up in a family with patriotic traditions; his brother Stoyan was an activist in the struggles for a national church in the region. From January 1872 he worked as a physician in Vereya, Moscow Oblast. Even before the war, in November 1876, he was named in a report by General Stoletov concerning the formation of the Bulgarian Volunteer Corps. In March 1877 he was appointed military doctor of the Third Volunteer Battalion, and later became senior physician of the Volunteer Corps. He took part in the battles at Stara Zagora, Shipka and Sheynovo. On 23 August, at a critical moment in the defence of Shipka, he gathered the more lightly wounded and led them in a bayonet counterattack. On 22 January 1878 he was severely wounded in the chest near the village of Kadarfaklii. Treated at the Kiev military hospital and in Odessa, he died of his wounds in Crimea at the end of 1878, at only 30 years of age. Today the village of Vezenkovo bears his name.
