A physician from the distinguished Shishmanov family, born in Banat, who graduated in medicine in Vienna. He worked in Bulgaria after the Liberation and later practiced in Smyrna and Constantinople, distinguishing himself as a pioneer of surgery and a great philanthropist.
Asen Shishmanov was born in 1848 in Banat, into the family of the merchant Stratsimir Shishmanov and his wife Rachilya. He graduated in medicine in Vienna in 1873 and defended a doctorate. He worked as a physician in Temesvár and as a resident physician at the Vienna hospital "Rudolfspital". After the Liberation he returned to Bulgaria, where he was elected chief physician of Sofia and a member of the first Medical Council in the Principality. He held the post of senior physician at the Alexander Hospital. In 1884 he performed the first tracheotomy in Bulgaria, and in 1885 he was among the founders of the Bulgarian Red Cross Society. He was also involved in politics as a municipal councillor and a member of parliament for the Liberal Party. Because of his pro-Russian orientation, he left Bulgaria during Stambolov's rule – from 1889 he practiced in Smyrna, and from 1890 in Constantinople. Known as a philanthropist, he bequeathed his house, garden and printing house to the Bulgarian Hospital in Constantinople. His wife Maria continued his charitable work.
