Physicians in the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878)Physicians Born in the 19th Century
Hristo Lekarski was a freedom fighter from a family of the Bulgarian National Revival, who twice interrupted his medical studies in order to take part in wars of liberation. After the Liberation he made his career as a public figure and long-serving mayor of Kyustendil.
Born in 1851 in Kyustendil, Hristo Lekarski came from a Revival-era family of physicians – his father, Dr. Ivan Lekarski, was the first town physician of Kyustendil, and his brother Vasil and his grandfather Hristo were also physicians. He received his primary education in his native town, after which he studied in Písek, Bohemia. He studied medicine in Geneva, but when the Serbian-Turkish War was declared (1876), he left the university and enlisted as a volunteer medical orderly. After the war he resumed his studies in Geneva, but when the Russo-Turkish War was declared, he joined the Bulgarian Volunteer Corps. After the Liberation he worked as secretary of the Kyustendil District Judicial Council and as a teacher. He was elected mayor of Kyustendil for three consecutive terms (1884–1893) and was a member of Stefan Stambolov's People's Liberal Party. During his time as mayor, public improvement projects were carried out – a town plan was adopted, a new school was built, and the afforestation of the "Hisarlaka" hill was begun. From 1899 he was excise chief in Kyustendil, then in Vratsa, and again in Kyustendil. He died on 5 April 1907 in his native town.
