A surgeon, obstetrician-gynecologist and public figure from Yambol, who took part as a volunteer in three wars. Sentenced to death on political charges and posthumously rehabilitated.

Petko Ivanov Momchilov was born on 22 May 1893 in Tarnovo, into an old and influential family from Elena – a grandson of the Revival-era figure Ivan Momchilov. He studied medicine in Lyon, France, but twice interrupted his studies as a volunteer in the Balkan War and the First World War. The French did not allow him to continue his education, and as a result he completed his medical degree and defended a doctoral dissertation in surgery in Naples, Italy. Between 1922 and 1927 he was an assistant to Prof. Aleksandar Stanishev in the Surgical Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine in Sofia, publishing works and textbooks. From 1927 he settled in Yambol, where he opened a private surgical clinic. He took an active part in public life – he was a co-founder of the Archaeological Society and of the Masonic lodge "Kabile." During the Second World War he served at the front as a surgeon. After 1944 his clinic was nationalized; from 1949 to 1952 he headed the obstetrics and gynecology department of the Yambol hospital. On 29 September 1952 he was arrested, sentenced to death for "espionage activity," and shot on 23 January 1953. He was rehabilitated in 1993.
