Physicians from Veliko TarnovoPhysicians in the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878)
The first qualified physician in Razgrad, who practised there before and during the Liberation. The son of Dr. Marko Pavlov, one of the first physicians in the Bulgarian lands.
Haralampi Markov was a native of Tarnovo and graduated in medicine from the Imperial Military Medical School in Constantinople. He probably studied at his own expense, which is why he was not assigned as a military physician. From 1873 he practised in Razgrad as the first and only physician in the town – an environment of poor hygiene, widespread folk healers and charm-women, and prevailing infectious diseases. Because there was no hospital (the town had none until 1894), he worked privately from a house, and obtained medicines from Rousse, Shumen and Tarnovo, where his brother Georgi ran a pharmacy. During the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation he sent information about the movements of the Turkish troops and cared for wounded Russian soldiers and the afflicted civilian population. He worked in Razgrad until 1883, after which he was appointed town physician in Provadia. The years of his life are not known.
