A physician from Tarnovo in the 19th century, who worked as a military doctor in Constantinople and took part in an operation on Sultan Abdulmejid. He died young of a tropical disease in Egypt.

Georgi Popovich was born in Tarnovo between 1805 and 1810 and was a pupil of the "school of Hellenic studies" in the town. He graduated from the Military Medical School in Constantinople, where his fellow students included Paraskev Kazaski, Panteley Minchovich, Georgi Valkovich, Pavel Markov and other Bulgarians. After graduating, he worked as a military doctor. On 22 October 1855, as an assistant to the Austrian surgeon Dr. Lorenz Rigler, he took part in a successful operation on Sultan Abdulmejid at the hospital in Meltepe, Constantinople. The two physicians visited Tarnovo, where they were given a ceremonial welcome. On his return to Constantinople, Popovich was suspected of involvement in the struggle for the liberation of the fatherland and was sent to organize a military sanitary service in Egypt, where he soon contracted a tropical disease and died, not yet fifty years old. His biography has fallen into oblivion owing to the lack of archival documents; the only local historian who wrote about him was Dr. P. Hishrov in 1938.
